1 Peter 2:1 – Slander (July 14)

Hello and thanks for joining in on to today’s daily devotion. Today is Thursday. July 14th. The 5th day of the Hebraic week.

Our verse today is 1 Peter 2:1.

1 Peter 2:1
Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.

Today, we want to focus on the fifth and last item mentioned in this verse. Slander of every kind. The Greek actually says “every slander.”

Slander can be defined as making a false statement that damages a person’s reputation. But it really doesn’t have to be a false statement. Even true statements can be slander if spoken with the intent to damage ones reputation.

Defending yourself verbally is one thing. Yet, going on the offensive when the other individual is not there to defend themselves can be slander. Remember, we are to rid ourselves from slander of
every kind.

Even if the words are not spoken with the intent to damage a reputation, if they a spoken around others, you can inadvertently damage their reputation to those who are listening. Plus, talking
about someone when others are around can not only damage how those listening will view that individual but can actually damage their image of you in the long run. They will think “If they
talk about this individual behind their back, could they do the same to me?” So use caution. Let’s rid ourselves of every slander.

Let this be a focus in your time of meditation throughout the day. Until tomorrow, shalom!
