Isaiah 25:1 – Context (April 11)

Hello and thanks for joining in on to today’s daily devotion. Today is Monday. April 11th. The 2nd day of the Hebraic week.

Our verse today is Isaiah 25:1.

Isaiah 25:1
O YHWH, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done marvelous things, things planned long ago.

I saw this verse on a FaceBook meme not too long ago. What a beautiful proclamation right? Here we see Isaiah praising YHWH because of all the marvelous things He has done. Things that were planned long ago. He is definitely worthy of our praise. However, have you ever wondered what these things were that Isaiah was giving him praise for here? These things that were planned long ago? Listen to the next verse to find out.

2 You have made the city a heap of rubble, the fortified town a ruin, the foreigners’ stronghold a city no more; it will never be rebuilt.

Well, now, that changes things up a little huh? If you read the previous chapter, you will find these verses are in the context of a massive earth that is prophesied to still happen. Remember, the scriptures were not written with chapters and verses. Those were all added in much later.

While there is definitely nothing wrong with showing this verse by itself, I do believe the point has been made for the importance of knowing the surrounding verses when reading scripture.

Let this be a focus in your time of meditation throughout the day. Until tomorrow, shalom!
