March 11

Hello and thanks for joining in on to today’s daily devotion. Today is Friday. March 11th. The 6th day of the Hebraic week.

Our verse today is 2 Kings 7:2.

2 Kings 7:2
The officer on whose arm the king was leaning said to the man of God, “Look, even if YHWH should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?” “You will see it with your own eyes,” answered Elisha, “but you will not eat any of it!”

This story is amazing to me. If you get the time, I encourage you to read all of it. Israel had been surrounded by the armies of Aram for a long time. It doesn’t say exactly how long in this text but it was long enough that a famine was taking place for Israel. Let’s look at the previous couple of verses for context.

2 Kings 6:33
While he was still talking to them, the messenger came down to him. And [the king] said, “This disaster is from YHWH. Why should I wait for YHWH any longer?”

2 Kings 7:1
Elisha said, “Hear the word of YHWH. This is what YHWH says: About this time tomorrow, a seah of flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria.”

Elisha declares that not only will the famine be over in one day, but it would be over in such a way that they will have food in abundance. This is why we see the response of the kings officer. It just seemed to amazing to be believable. And then we see Elisha’s response to him as…

“You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it!”

At first this could seem too harsh for someone who didn’t believe. However, this is not just about unbelief, this was a declaration of putting limits on YHWH. Listen to the officers response again.

“Look, even if YHWH should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?”

He wasn’t just doubting if the event could happen, he was doubting the ability of YHWH. So let’s be careful in life to not put limits on what YHWH can do. Let’s not end up like this officer of the King of Israel who ended up seeing YHWH’s hand at work, but was unable to partake in it.

Let this be a focus in your time of meditation throughout the day. Until tomorrow, shalom!
